La Rochefort 10 °History
We have been brewing at the abbey since 1595 but at the time, priority was given to agricultural activity. During the French Revolution, the monks fled the abbey which was looted and all brewing activity was stopped. The congregation was reformed at the end of the 19th century and it was in 1950 that the monks brewed again in Rochefort. It is the production started on this date which is the starting point of the brand which exists until today
The WestmalleWestmalle Abbey was founded in 1794. In 1836, following extensive extension work, Westmalle Abbey was joined by a brewery. The abbey began to market its beer around 1861, following the example of the Chimay abbey which had started to market its beers in 1859.
ChimayIn 1850, Prince Joseph of Caraman-Chimay invited the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Sixte to Westvleteren (West Flanders) to found a new Cistercian abbey. From 1862, beer was produced from water from the wells of the abbey.
